Welcome to English Ed Reads!

The English Education reading group at Michigan State University reads research studies, theory, commentary, history, and all things related to English education. We promote a critical and interdisciplinary look at our field.

We meet weekly to discuss one reading in depth. Readings are chosen by members.

Anyone may view this wiki, but only members may edit pages.

To find the reading for this week, go to Readings. This is also where you can discuss the reading of the week, using the Discussion tab.
To get the schedule for upcoming weeks, go to Calendar.
To suggest a reading, go to Wish List.

New project!!!

The National Governor's Association and the Council of Chief State School Officers are sponsoring the writing of the Common Core Standards, which 49 states or so have pledged to adopt, once written. NCTE has links to the most recent draft of the standards, which is currently open for response. Also of interest: check out Kylene Beers open letter to the membership, which describes how NCTE is involved in the process (such a limited involvement), and provides a very interesting response to the July draft of the standards (see the link on http://www.ncte.org/standards/commoncore).

As you make your way into the standards, take a look at the makeup of the standards development work group (the group that is actually writing the standards) and the feedback group (those invited to respond to the drafts). Also, click on the links and see what the "evidence" is for the various standards.

There are opportunities to respond: NCTE has a thread on their Ning, and the Common Core people invite feedback. If you think literacy and English ed folks at Michigan State should respond, please take part in our discussion here -- see Discussion tab on this page -- and we will compile a response in the reading group.

Also of interest: Tom Hoffman's blog post, "10 Reasons you should care about the Common Core State Standards Initiative English Language Arts Standards": http://www.tuttlesvc.org/2009/09/10-reasons-why-you-should-care-about.html

Here is the Validation committee list: these are the people who will approve the final draft. This is a much more balanced list than the writers of the standards, so we should take heart!
